It’s been along time since we rock ‘n’ rolled! Wow, I’ve been putting the log into blog lately eh? How f*ckin’ slack!
Any ho… stuff has been happening in the Dogs camp. You might have noticed a few murmurings re recording and it’s all true (well, most of it)! After a last minute scramble, we came up with 7 more tracks (to join our existing trilogy of songs) for our next album… and I have to say, after hearing a rough mix of what’s been recorded, I’m pretty damn happy with how it’s sounding!
So with the album mostly recorded, “what’s next?” I hear you ask… There’s just a couple of vocal verses and some backing vocals left to record and then it’s time to mix it all properly… you know, tweak all the volumes of everything; drum kit, percussion, bass, piano, guitars, keyboards, vocals… on just one of the songs alone, there’s something like 22 different guitar tracks! It’s quite a process man, and an entire day will be dedicated to the mixing of each individual track, before the songs are all sent off for mastering. Then there’s coding, album cover stuff and all sorts of sh*t I probably don’t even know about! So don’t start holding your breath just yet…
In June, we’re reuniting with our partners in crime, Wellington supergroup; Supermodel, for 3 more live shows in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch… BOOYAH!
And who knows, later in the year we’ll probably make another vid and maybe f*ck off to Germany to see what the scene’s like there! Fasten ya seat belts y’all!

Already 1 year has passed since the catastrophic 6.3 magnitude earthquake reeked havoc to my quaint little hometown; Christchurch. It’s hard to believe that the place I have always known as home, could suddenly be erased… that so many lives could just suddenly be extinguished and turned upside down on my very own door step! It’s sad, but for most of us here life (for better or worse) has continued this past year.
We’ve had something like 10,000 aftershocks since the first quake hit back in September of 2010. Key sites are still being deemed as unsafe and significant buildings have awaited demolition since February 2011.
On this, the anniversary of the most devastating day in our history, it would seem tacky and lewd to indulge in any shameless self promotion or to capitalize on a community’s misfortune and heartache.
If music happens to be your thing and you’d like to make some small gesture towards helping, there are now a couple of commemorative albums available to you:
The first is Love Christchurch, which features a cool eclectic blend of local Christchurch artists; including Ladi 6, Salmonella Dub, Cairo Knife Fight, Dukes and of course Sleeping Dogs.
Also hot off the press (it’s being released today!) is Sounds for the South; featuring tracks donated by musicians from all over.
Check ‘em out!

Hi folks, Alex the roadie checking in again!
The last week’s leg was as eventful as any of them, with our favourite bands – Sleeping Dogs and Supermodel of course – successfully pulverising the eardrums of nearby punters and dancers. It was good to be able to sample the audiences of the more out-of-the-way areas of the North Island!
Roy at the Cabana in Napier was awesome, ever helpful as usual. I think we all feel sometimes as if making it in the music industry is like winning a hard and passionately-fought battle. So, we were pounding the pavement, at the rock’n'roll coal face – winning hearts and minds – handing out flyers and getting more and more enthusiastic fans all the time. Some fans were so enthusiastic that Mark was forced to take one for the team and have a toke from what turned out to be a joint. (more…)

It’s exciting times at Sleeping Dogs HQ at the mo… that’s right, we’re rehearsing new material! Fresh ideas are coming out of the woodwork, literally it seems, with the studio around us in the process of getting framed and jibbed! The rhythm section’s jamming out, Thomas is locking himself away for hours at a time musing over lyrics and tweaking chord changes and I’m even picking up the guitar again to figure some sh*t out… crikey!
On the 3rd of December some of this newly inspired rock juice will be freshly squeezed for you (pith and all) for the very first time at Christchurch’s new Dux Live! Joining us will be Von Voin Strum, The Easy Hearts and our old partners in grime House of Mountain.

The track Myth Reducer can now be heard within the context of the new Love Christchurch compilation; “a seismic selection of music from Christchurch”. The proceeds of this album go toward the rebuilding of Christchurch following the devastating February 2011 earthquake.
It features a diverse range of Christchurch artists, showcasing everyone from Ladi6 to The Bats! Whatever musical stylings tickle your fancy, there should be something here to float everyone’s boat. I’ve been listening to it over the last couple of days and am lovin’ it!
It kicks off with some really infectious grooves, including Salmonella Dub’s “Up & Running”, so get ready to shake that money maker! The pace changes often, going from dance grooves to acoustic feels, to electrified pop and beyond. Highlights for me include Lindon Puffin’s very hooky “Outta Reach” and The Easy Heart’s 70′s inspired and Deep Purple-esque “Leaves Me Cold”.
Get into Love Christchurch and keep an ear out for our friend Hera. Why? Because it Feels So Good!

Last week saw the Dogs heading up to Auckland for the day, with the lovely Hera, where we bought some new threads, dined down on the viaduct, popped into the Juice office and caught up with our mates at York Street Studios.
We rocked it out on the LIVE and LOUD tour at the Wheatsheaf Tavern, Governors Bay, on Thursday night. It was a cool evening and the nice people at the Wheasheaf looked after us well; providing the entire crew with liquid amber beverages and fried goodies. Performance wise the crowd was treated to an energetic show from Hera, House of Mountain and of course, us! In fact the quality of what was presented that night, was hand lickin’ good!
Our track Natalie was made available for free download at dailybeat. If you missed it, don’t worry, you can still download the track from our My Band on the Sleeping Dogs facebook page!
We heard back from the Vodafone Music Awards and in regards to the following nominations were advised… (more…)
